British Army Sky Sabre Air Defence System

The British Army unveiled the Sky Sabre air defence missile system at Baker Barracks, the home of 16 Regiment Royal Artillery, on Thorney Island.
Sky Sabre, developed for the UK Sky Sabre ground-based air defence (GBAD) requirement, is due in service in 2020 and will prove to be a step change in the UK’s air defences, taking it from short to medium range capability. Simply put that means being able to hit an enemy target that much further out, way beyond visual range.
Speaking at the unveiling Air Commodore Ian Gale MBE Senior Responsible Officer for the introduction of the system (Project Director) said “You are seeing the future here today, you can’t replace like for like in the digital age.
“This will take the Army from short to medium range, It is a truly integrated air defence system that will be operated both by the Army and the Royal Air Force. It has significant benefits; it’s fast, reliable and trusted”.
This was the first time that the three principal components of the system had come together; the launcher with misssiles, radar system, and the command and control system. The system will replace the Army’s Rapier air defence system.
Missile Launcher :-
The launcher vehicle is based on the MAN SV HX60 8×8 truck and is equipped with 12 launch tubes that fires the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM).
Equipped with an active radar frequency seeker, CAMM is a next generation air defence missile designed for land, sea, and air environments; in its land-based application (Land Ceptor) it will replace the Rapier Field Standard C surface-to-air missile system. The UK Royal Navy equivalent is designated Sea Ceptor.
Compared to Rapier, Land Ceptor has over triple the range (25 km+) and is able to intercept the most challenging targets in any weather conditions, including cruise missiles and precision guided munitions (PGM).
Radar System :-
The radar of the air defense system is the Giraffe Agile Multi-Beam (AMB) medium-range 3-D radar surveillance system provided by Swedish company, Saab.
Command and Control :-
Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems will supply its Modular, Integrated C4I Air & Missile Defense System (MIC4AD) as the battle management command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (BMC4I) solution for Sky Sabre.
The Sky Sabre, earlier known as the Land Ceptor, will replace the short range Rapier Field Standard C surface-to-air missile system currently operational and is slated to enter service in 2020. The integrated air defense system will be operated both by the Army and the Royal Air Force.
The system consist the MBDA launcher that fires the CAMM missile, the Saab radar targeting system, aptly named the Giraffe because of its extending neck and the command and the Rafael control electronics suite from which the system is operated.
Israeli Rafael supplies its Modular, Integrated C4I Air & Missile Defense System (MIC4AD) as the the battle management command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (BMC4I) solution for Sky Sabre.
Army unveils Sky Sabre Air Defence system, due in service in 2020, and will greatly improve UK air defence.  The Sky Sabre is a highly compact system, with the 12 missile launchers and the Saab Giraffe Radar integrated on a high mobility Rheinmetall MAN HX family 4×4 truck.
Designed and manufactured by MBDA in the UK, the Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) is designed for use both at sea and on land and provide 360 degree coverage, and is based on the MBDA ASRAAM air to air missile. With a top speed of Mach 3, the CAMM has the ability to defend against anti-ship cruise missiles, aircraft and other highly sophisticated threats.
The CAMM is equipped with an active radar frequency seeker, that provides true all-weather performance with excellent clutter rejection capabilities. The missile weights 99 kg and has a range of more than 25 km.
CAMM will also be deployed as the Sea Ceptor air defense system, onboard Royal Navy’s Type 23 and future Type 26 warships.
